How to Maintain Your WordPress Website: Log In, Update Plugins, and Edit Content

WordPress Roles

The Administrator role has the most power over your website. Use this account sparingly, like when you are making critical changes. Limit the number of people who have the username and password for the admin account.

The Editor role has limited access to your website. Use this account when you are making day-to-day content changes.

How to Log Into Your Website

1. The login URL for your website, and for most WordPress websites, is: domain.com/login

2. Enter the credentials. You will be taken to a new page.

Once you are logged in, the new page you will see is the Dashboard. Here is a snippet of the upper left corner:

How to Update Plugins

Plugins add functionality and features to your website. Keeping your plugins up-to-date is an important part of your website’s maintenance. Security enhancements, among other things, are released through these updates. This should be done on a monthly basis, at minimum. There may be times when you don’t have any plugins to update.

In order to access the plugins, you need to be logged in as an administrator.

1. Log into your website.

2. If any plugins need to be updated, you will see a red alert from the Dashboard next to “Updates”:

3. Click on Updates. You will be taken to a new screen.

4. Under the Plugins section, check off Select All.

5. Click Update Plugins. You will be taken to a new screen. This process will take some time, depending on how many need updating.

Done!

How to Edit Content on a Page

You should be using an Editor account for content updates and day-to-day usage.

1. Log into your website.

2. From the Dashboard, navigate to Pages. You will be taken to a new screen.

3. Find the page you want to edit and click Edit with Elementor. You will be taken to a new page. It will take a moment to load.

4. Find the content you want to modify. Once you click on it, you will see an editor pane on the left side of the screen. It will look similar to the screenshot below:

5. After you’ve made all your edits, click the green UPDATE at the bottom of the editor pane. Once the changes have been saved, the UPDATE button will turn grey. Done!

Note: if you want to ADD or REMOVE blocks of content, you need to be logged in as an administrator.
